Carrying on a 46-year tradition, the Sports Celebrity Dinner is held in Halifax each February. In 1972, the inaugural event was planned as a way to raise funds in support of the King’s Meadow Home for mentally challenged adults in Windsor, N.S. Over the years, the Dinner has attracted close to 300 world class speakers from all genres of professional and amateur sport to assist with the generous fundraising efforts of the Canadian Progress Club – Halifax.
NHL. MLB. NFL. NBA. CFL. Boxers. Olympians. Many, many more. Hockey royalty such as Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Eric Lindros and Mark Messier. Baseball legends including Tim "Rock" Raines, Jose Canseco, Joe Carter and “The Hawk” Andre Dawson. NFL greats like Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, Eric Dickerson and Hines Ward. NBA superstars Bill Walton, Isiah Thomas and “Dr. J” Julius Erving. Boxing champions Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes and Jake LaMotta. Olympic heroes like Hayley Wickenheiser, Christine Sinclair and Donovan Bailey. These greats and many more have all visited our province and entertained our patrons. To compliment a night of laughter, locker room tales and life lessons with the sporting world's elite, the evening also includes an exciting sports trivia contest, raffle draw, and live and silent auctions. The event continues to flourish and has grown into one of the single largest fundraising events in Atlantic Canada, with over twelve hundred guests, national press coverage and tremendous local business support. Over the last number of years, the net proceeds from the event have averaged over $100,000 annually.
